Exploring PRA Disease In Your Dog

PRA disease is common amongst many dog breeds and stands for progressive retinal atrophy. The disease causes a dog to go blind in both eyes at the same time and is considered to be painless for canines. The first major signs that eyes are starting to go are eye dilation. The owner will notice that the pupils seem to glow more than usual, and eventually, the dog will stop seeing all together. There is no real cure for Pra disease but many clinical trials have shown that a combination of antioxidant treatments work to slow the progression of the disease as long as they are given prior to complete vision loss. Once complete vision loss has occurred, nothing can be done, however your dog can still live a very happy life. If you suspect that your dog may have PRA disease get them to your veterinarian as soon as possible.
